New Pet Wellness

Pre-Pet Consultations

Pre-Pet Consultations:

Our veterinarians offer these pre-pet consultations for prospective pet owners. Have you decided you want a pet, but are not sure what kind? Do you want a dog, but haven't decided what breed? Do you want a particular personality of cat, and wonder where to find one? Is your family in conflict over what exact type of pet you'll get? Have you, or someone close to you, had a previous bad experience with bringing a pet into your home and it just did not work out?

If you answered "yes" to any of the above questions, schedule a pre-pet consultation with Dr. Howard. He will talk to you about your expectations (do you want a fireside companion? A dog to run with your active kids?), your ability to supply exercise, training, grooming, etc. and he'll make some specific recommendations for your pet. He'll also go over some information you should be aware of before you buy (congenital and hereditary problems, health issues, etc.).

If you like, we can even supply some recommendations for potential sources of your new pet.

New Puppy or Kitten Exams

NEW PUPPY/KITTEN EXAMS

New puppy/new kitten exams are complete and thourough, and include not just a head to toe physical, but also behavior and nutritional counseling, help with house training, learning how to trim your pet's nails, information on tick/heartworm/flea/intestinal parasite control, and general assistance with any questions you may have. The exam also includes puppy/kitten raising notebooks.

If you want to get the full and complete scoop on raising your new youngster, bring him to us! We will make sure we answer any and all questions you may have, and we'll also steer you towards puppy trainers and classes, and other professionals who can help, too.

Puppy and Kitten Follow-up Visits

Puppy and Kitten Follow-up Visits:

New puppies and kittens need to come in every 3 weeks until they are more than 16 weeks old. After the initial visit, these are recheck exams, and in addition to the vaccinations and checkup, the doctor will cover new topics/problems in behavior, nutrition, parasites, and training.

We strive to prevent illness whenever possible. The time and effort invested in Wellness programs has rewards for both pets and owners. Our Wellness programs are designed specifically for your pet and include: Comprehensive physical exam; internal parasite testing; heartworm and flea control; vaccination program; spay and neuter package; and specialized blood tests for all life stages.

If you have just moved into the area, or have lived here for a while but would like to try our hospital, we encourage you to schedule a brief exam to establish medical records for your pet.

If your pet needs medication (including Heartworm preventatives), we cannot prescribe them until we have examined your pet and established a medical record. This is the law in North Carolina and it also makes good medical sense. Drug choices and dosages are often affected by the pet's age, current weight, optimum weight, and any medical conditions that can affect medication dosages (sensitive GI system, kidney disease, heart murmur, etc.).

Expect your pet to receive a head to toe examination, and have every organ system checked and evaluated. We will also cover tick/heartworm/flea control, any behavior issues, give nutritional recommendations, and more.

Recheck Exams

RECHECK EXAMS
All pets with medical problems are usually asked to schedule a recheck visit so we can be sure our treatment is really effective, and so we can make medication adjustments as needed. Without these rechecks, we can never be sure that your pet's medical condition is truly gone, and frequent and fast relapses (becoming chronic disease) are common.

RADIOLOGY

Radiology – or X-rays – help our veterinarians evaluate muscular-skeletal, cardiovascular(cardiopulmonary), gastrointestinal, reproductive and urinary systems.

We have a modern x-ray suite with automatic processor, which allows us to quickly take quality x-rays.

When should your pet have x-rays taken?

Anytime there is a persistent cough (for more than two weeks).
If your pet has a severe limp, or won’t put any weight on one leg.
Chronic limping on a particular leg, even if it seems to come and go.
Reluctance to go up stairs, jump into the car, or difficulty in getting up.
If you suspect your pet may have eaten something, like a hearing aid or necklace (these are actual cases, and yes, the dog did eat the hearing aid and the cat did eat part of the necklace).
If your pet is vomiting repeatedly, especially if he/she is vomiting up any water they drink.
If we find a malignant tumor on/in your pet, to check for possible spread or metastasis.
If your pet has difficulty breathing.
If your pet is reluctant to move, and seems in pain.
If your pet has a suspicious lump on/near a bone or joint.
In some cases, we may recommend an ultrasound examination instead of x-rays.

Dental Care

Regular professional cleaning is important to maintaining your pet's teeth. We use modern and safe ultrasound to clean each tooth thoroughly - above and below the gum line. We have available a home delivery service for all maintenance medications as well as prescription and premium foods. Why? Convenience is the number one reason. Orders and refills can be requested at any time, simply by clicking on Prescriptions, or by calling 256-2624. Items are usually delivered within 48 hours.

House Call Services

House Call Services:

Our veterinarians may be able to make a housecall if you are unable to bring your pet to the clinic. This service is available for established clients, by advanced appointment for wellness visits only.

We can also make arrangements for our staff to pick up your pet if you have transortation problems.

We will make arrangements to ship or home deliver your maintenance medications and prescription foods (see Home Delivery Service).

Hospice

Hospice:

If your pet needs hospice type care to ease his last days, we'll teach you how to care for him at home as much as possible. Tube feeding, fluids, pain medications, and more are available for hospice care. We'll also help you make the decision as to when it is time to say goodbye.

Saying Goodbye (Euthanasia)

Euthanasia:

Saying goodbye to any friend is painful. We'll help you to ensure your pet's comfort, dignity, and ease of going. If this came on suddenly, we'll also try our very best to be sure everyone has an adequate chance to say their good-byes.

You are welcome to stay with your pet as he goes, or say your goodbyes and leave. Most owners prefer to stay, but please don't feel guilty if you choose not to. If you leave, two of us will be right there with him; we won't put him in a kennel, and we'll talk to him, soothe him, and pet him just like you would if you were there.

The entire process takes a few minutes; we often give a pre-injection that relaxes and relieves any pain that can occur with the final IV injection. Some owners prefer to leave after their pet has reached this stage of pretty relaxed and fairly oblivious.

The actual injection that puts a pet to sleep is an overdose of an anesthetic. The first part of the injection produces actual anesthesia, and the last part of the injection stops everything. It is rapid, and usually quite easy for the pet.

Saying goodbye to a long-time friend is painful. We work with clients to ensure their pet's comfort and dignity. Services include taking care of the remains as directed by the client.
